An oversized knit sweater is the one you reach for every cold morning. It is roomy, cozy, and it hides a multitude of sins, including a slightly off gauge. The relaxed fit also makes it one of the most forgiving garments to knit.
Here are 11 free oversized sweater patterns we opened and checked by hand. There are jumbo-yarn turtlenecks, slouchy drop-shoulder pullovers, bold stripes, and a couple of airy lace and mohair options for warmer days. - Ready for a step up? #5 and #8 add a decorative yoke or lace.
FAQ
How much ease should an oversized sweater have?
Most oversized sweaters have 8 to 12 inches of positive ease, meaning the sweater is that much bigger than your chest. Some go further; Vesper uses 20 inches or more. Check the pattern’s finished bust, not just the size name, and compare it to a sweater you love.
Should I size up to make a sweater oversized?
If the pattern is already written oversized, knit your usual size. Sizing up a fitted sweater can work, but shoulders and sleeves will grow too and may look sloppy. Drop-shoulder patterns are the most forgiving when you want extra room.
What yarn is best for an oversized knit sweater?
Bulky and super bulky yarns give a cozy, quick sweater. For a lighter drape, try DK or a mohair blend. Choose a soft, light yarn, because big sweaters use a lot of it and heavy fibers like pure cotton can stretch out of shape.
Grab your biggest needles and enjoy knitting the sweater you will want to live in all season.
